In terms of anticipatory driving and prevention, the Econic is a decisive step ahead of conventional trucks. And that has to do with its low seating position and the panoramic glazing of the cab, plus the fact that the Econic has a wide range of safety assistants on board. With the aid of cameras, sensors and additional lighting systems, the driver can concentrate on the most important tasks – even in situations which require utmost concentration: in lively city traffic, when turning, manoeuvring and reversing, or in the case of a tailback being just behind a blind bend.
More than just a view: an overview.
Advantages at a glance.
- Safety assistance systems are available which are fine-tuned to one another
- Designed specifically for urban operations
- Image and sensor-based systems complement each other logically
- Relieving the driver in dangerous situations
Observation and reaction.
A comprehensive package of safety assistance systems helps Econic drivers to maintain a good overview in critical situations.

Blind spot camera system.
The blind spot camera system reduces blind spots around the Econic to a minimum. The working area around the truck is therefore clearly visible in any situation. And the already good visibility offered to the driver by the panoramic glazing is usefully supplemented. To this end, four cameras are installed around the vehicle and an automated display is integrated in the cockpit.
Advantages at a glance.
- 7-inch monitor in the cab
- Front camera to replace the front mirror
- Cameras on the left and right-hand exterior mirrors
- Reversing camera mounted directly on the body

Active Brake Assist 6.
Active Brake Assist 5 is the next step on from the tried-and-tested emergency braking system Active Brake Assist 4 from Mercedes-Benz Trucks. This generation combines radar and camera. The new sensor fusion has dramatically improved response to moving pedestrians at speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour. Active Brake Assist 5 is now capable of applying maximum full-stop braking in response to pedestrians crossing its path, approaching from the front or moving ahead.
Avoiding rear-end collisions.
Active Brake Assist 5 can detect vehicles ahead and stationary obstacles in the vehicle's own lane – at vehicle speeds up to 90 km/h. If the system detects a dangerous situation, a three-stage reaction is immediately triggered:
- Visual signals and a loud beep
warn the driver - Partial braking with approx. 50% braking power
is performed in order to reduce the speed (if the driver has not reacted beforehand) - Maximum full-stop braking
is initiated in order to bring the vehicle to a standstill (if the driver has still not reacted)
If the system detects crossing pedestrians or people standing on the carriageway, the reaction chain is shortened even further. The driver is warned both visually and acoustically, but partial braking is simultaneously initiated autonomously. Because when people's lives are at stake, there is no time for hesitation.
Pedestrian detection can occur up to a vehicle speed of 50 km/h: if pedestrians cross the truck's lane, approach it or walk in its lane.
Within the system limits or within physical limits, the system can react with partial or maximum full-stop braking if stationary and moving objects or moving pedestrians are detected. In these traffic situations, the driver still remains wholly responsible for driving the vehicle safely.
Advantages at a glance.
- Sensor fusion of radar and camera
- Vehicle can perform a full application of the brakes in response to stationary and moving objects in certain situations
- At vehicle speeds up to 50 km/h, partial or full braking for moving pedestrians
Sideguard Assist 2.
Sideguard Assist detects people on the co-driver's side and issues an audible and visual signal by way of warning to the driver. For safe and stress-free driving.
Advantages at a glance.
- Two radar sensors monitor the co-driver's side at close range
- Visual warning in the A pillar if people are currently in the danger zone
- Can prevent accidents in typically lively city traffic
Adaptive cruise control.
Adaptive cruise control manages the distance to the vehicle driving in front, automatically adjusts the speed of the Econic and thus reduces the risk of a collisions with vehicles driving ahead.
Advantages at a glance.
- Proximity control active from 15 km/h
- Supports the driver in maintaining the speed
- Maintains a pre-defined distance to the vehicle driving in front
Retrofit solutions and GenuineAccessories for Mercedes-Benz Trucks.
Sideguard Assist retrofit solution.
Sideguard Assist supports drivers when turning off into other roads with the aid of two close-range sensors. The Sideguard Assist retrofit solution (code S1R retrofit) is available for left-hand-drive Econic vehicles (code Z5X) produced as of 02.01.2017 and for right-hand-drive Econic vehicles (code Z5W) produced as of 01.08.2017. For binding information as to whether your vehicle can be retrofitted, please ask your Mercedes-Benz Trucks partner.
Advantages at a glance.
- Two radar sensors monitor the co-driver's side at close range
- Visual warning in the A pillar if people are currently in the danger zone
- Can prevent accidents in typically lively city traffic
GenuineAccessories SurroundView system.
The modular SurroundView system from Mercedes-Benz Trucks GenuineAccessories transmits images of the truck's surroundings to a display, thus providing an all-round view and helping the driver during manoeuvring.
Advantages at a glance.
- As many as four cameras around the vehicle display the vehicle surroundings on a display in the cab
- Variable split-screen mode for the simultaneous display of several camera angles
- 7-inch TFT monitor with LED backlight and brightness sensor for automatic switching between day and night modes
- The waterproof camera housing features an integrated heating function and can be cleaned using a pressure washer (IP69K protection level)

Many more helpful systems.
A rain and light sensor as well as Lane Keeping Assist are just two of the standard pieces of equipment on the Econic. The reversing camera, a speed limiter for reversing and automatically activating hazard warning lights are also on-board as part of the standard specification. Work lamps help to illuminate the rear manoeuvring area as well as the area around the vehicle body. That leads to much greater operating safety in the hours of darkness.
